Waving Structure is a new approach to fabricating double-curved surfaces in architecture and engineering using a bending-active weaving structure inspired by traditional weaving handicrafts. The structure consists of continuous elastic rods and standard joints, making it convenient for construction. The generative system was invented by Prof Huang (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.autcon.2022.104184).
The bending-active weaving structure simplifies the fabrication process for double-curved surfaces by employing a bending-active mechanism in the form-finding of double-curved surfaces. Only the joint labels and locations along the uniform rods were required for the fabrication of the weaving structure. The fabrication information is generated by an algorithm during the fabrication process, and the rods are bound at locations with the same joint labels.
The weaving structure employs a bending-active form-finding mechanism for freeform fabrication, which uses bending-active rods to realize the curved form through structural form-finding. This is similar to the spline used for drafting curves, where the intersection points of the rods act as constraint points of the spline in drafting. Additionally, adaptive algorithms have been developed to generate weaving lattices on various freeform surfaces with more complex topologies. My work during the autumn of 2022 is to discuss the structural details for the landing of the weaving structure, solve technical problems, and ensure the perfect performance. This includes studying materials, structures and manufacturing processes to ensure the quality and stability of the woven structure. In order to make the structure more appealing, I also added the performance effect of LEDs.
When discussing lighting, I paid attention to the design of nodes to make the lighting more uniform. I studied various lighting effects, including color, brightness and dynamic effects, and selected and adjusted them according to the specific situation. In addition, I also discussed how to connect the lighting concept to the device to realize hardware and software control logic. Through these technical means, I can provide the best performance for the landing of the woven structure.
